ABOUT THE THEATRE

Situated at 49 Aldwych, London, the Aldwych opened in 1905. The theatre became very famous in the 1920s and 1930s, as a theatre that specialised in hosting farces by the celebrated playwright Ben Travers. In 1949, Vivien Leigh starred at the Aldwych in a stage version of 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. In 1960 the Royal Shakespeare Company used the theatre for its base in the capital.

The Aldwych has seen a raft of famous and talented performers over the years, and notable productions include 'Nicholas Nickleby' and 'The Wars of the Roses'. The Aldwych Sir Peter Daubeny’s World Theatre Season also had its home at the theatre.
