Wicked is one of the most famous shows in London currently. But what’s it all about? How can I watch it? Is it worth the hype? (I’d say so, I’ve seen it 5 times!) Here’s everything you need to know about ones of London’s most popularmusicals.
Wicked is the touching story of the two witches of Oz. It asks the question, “Is one born Wicked? Or does one have wickedness thrust upon them? The musical tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. It is based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire which serves as a prequel to the The Wizard of Oz. We see the young witches at university together as they develop into the characters we all know from the worlds first major colour film starring Judy Garland.
Wicked’s official opening night was 27th September 2006, meaning it will soon celebrate 19 years in the West End. It is already the 10th Longest Running show in West End history. The original production was tested in San Francisco before heading to Broadway in 2003.
The theatre is called The Apollo Victoria. The address is 17 Wilton Rd, Pimlico, London SW1V 1LG. The Apollo Victoria opened as a state of the art cinema in 1930. It was later converted to a theatre after it was closed down in 1975.

How long is the show?
Wicked runs for appromimatley 2 hours and 45 minutes including a 20 minute interval. For example performances starting at 7:30pm end at approximately 10.15pm. Similarly, performances starting at 2:30pm end at approximately 5.15pm.
When should I arrive at the theatre?
For this venue, the doors open 90 minutes prior to performance times with bars, kiosks, and toilet facilities available. We always advise you arrive 30 minutes before the show begins as this allows plenty of time to pass bag checks at the door, find your seats and get settled in. What is the age recommendation for Wicked London?
The musical is recommended for ages 7 an upwards. Although the venue accepts children over the age of 5 into the venue, it is a longer show and this show could be loud and overwhelming (maybe even a little scary) for children under 7. Victoria Coach Station is also a minute walk from the venue.
The Wicked Movie is based on the musical. From what we’ve seen of Part 1 so far, it is following the same plot. It had the same songs but some additional dialogue as the beauty of cinema allows to develop the world further than you can within the time of the one part, West End show.
The beautiful musical by Stephen Schwartz and its relevant story keeps audiences coming back. Stephen Schwartz supposedly begged Gregory Maguire for the rights to his novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the WIcked Witch of the West. The book’s story is very complex and is essentially about someone who looks different within society and has a different skin colour to those around her. It is also set in a world in which the powers of the country are stripping rights from minorities and clambering to villainize someone – someone who is different – to maintain control. The story resonates with so many people as they can relate, not only the the characters but to the worlds political landscape.
What’s more, Stephen Schwartz’s original score has provided beautiful and complex songs which have become genre defining in the world of musical theatre. Defying Gravity has become one of the worlds most famous theatre songs.

Sheridan Smith will play Susan, a woman who sustains a bump to the head making her world split in two. One is mundane and the other, imagined. As the lines begin to blur, Susan’s search for happiness takes a turn in Ayckbourn’s dark comedy.
Smith is a two time Oliver Award Winner. She is well known fro her work on TV including Gavin and Stacy, I Fought the Law and Cilla to name merely a few. Her appearance in Woman in Mind marks her return to The Duke of York’s Theatre following her run there in Shirley Valentine last year.
