The original movie the musical is based on and its two sequels were huge box office successes, taking in over $936 million at the box office. Workshops for the musical originally took place in London in the July of 2014 and then the following month in Los Angeles. The intention was to open the show in the West End in 2015, aligning with the 30th anniversary of the film. However, there was a delay in production and the show began previews in Manchester on 20th February 2020. The production played at the Manchester Opera House, directed by John Rando with choreography by Chris Bailey. Only a few days after the show’s official opening the show closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Back to the Future then transferred to the West End’s Adelphi Theatre in September 2021 with the same cast and creative team. The production was nominated for 7 Olivier Awards that year, including ‘Best New Musical’, which it went on to win. The musical then opened on Broadway in June 2023.
