Disney’s The Lion King has just hit another huge milestone in London. From today, 8 March 2025, the musical is now the sixth longest-running show in West End history. It has overtaken Blood Brothers for the spot and is now the fourth longest running musical.
The production is currently playing at the Lyceum Theatre and since it opoened in 1999 has wowed audiences night after night. The show recently celebrated its 10,000th performance on 25 February 2025.
Currently in the top spot as the West End’s longest running show is The Mousetrap at the St Martins Theatre, which has been running for over 70 years. Followed by Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre which has been playing in London since 1985. Then in the third spot is is The Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty’s Theatre. Coming in at number 4 is The Woman in Black, which played in London for nearly 35 years, before closing in 2023. Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre is number 5, now followed by The Lion King in sixth place.
Disney’s The Lion King has won over 70 major awards and has been seen by 110 million people worldwide. It follows the story of the young lion cub Simba on his journey to becoming king of the Prideland. A visual explosion of puppetry and vibrate costumes, the musical is not to be missed.
The musical features a beautiful score with songs from the original animated movie. With music and lyrics by Elton John, Tim Rice and Lebo M. The soundtrack includes classics such as ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’, ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Circle of Life’.
