Here’s a list of some West End Theatres with Air Conditioning! This week is yet another heat wave. A summer in the city during a heatwave can be unbearable but a trip to the theatre can offer an oasis. Many theatres are over 100 years old in the West End. Therefore, some venues cannot make the adaptations to install air conditioning or cooling units due to this. Don’t sweat it. Here are some theatres which can offer a more pleasant theatrical experience this week.
The Troubadour Canary Wharf

As a newer purpose built theatre, there is no surprise that this venue is air conditioned. Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre is a dynamic 1200 seat venue situated right in the heart of London’s internationally renowned financial district. This state-of-the-art venue was purpose built to host the World Premiere of the stage adaptation of The Hunger Games. The venue truly makes spectators feel a part of the action in this dynamic in the round arena, developed with blockbuster entertainment in mind.
The Hunger Games on Stage is a cinematic stage adaption of the bestselling book and movie franchise of the same name. The story follows Katniss Everdeen in a dystopian world. In Panem, each year a group of 12 – 17 year olds are forced to fight to the literal death as punishment for a rebellion against the Capitol years ago. When her little sister is chosen, she fearlessly volunteers herself as tribute. The story follows her journey as she unwittingly becomes the face of a new uprising.
Not only does this make the top on our list of Theatres with Air Conditioning but the location is nearby the newly opened Canary Wharf sea lanes. If you’re too warm after leaving the sanctuary of the theatre why not take a dip? This natural open water pool is open everyday in the summer.

The Criterion Theatre

Also reported to have an air conditioning system, The Criterion is the home of Titanique the Musical. Titanique is the classic story of the Titanic film retold. Through the eyes of Celine Dion of course! She tells us what really happened that fateful night on board the Titanic. Naturally, the story is told alongside some of the divas biggest hits! Featuring powerhouse voices and show-stopping numbers such as My Heart Will Go On, All by Myself and To Love You More – backed by a full live band – Titanique is a one-of-a-kind theatrical voyage bursting with nostalgia, heart and campy chaos.

The Lyceum Theatre

We didn’t expect this to make our list of theatres with air conditioning due to the age of the building however here we are! Some patrons even claimed they were too cold whilst watching the show in the peak of summer. Sounds dreamy to me!
The Lyceum Theatre is the long standing home of The Lion King. As one of London’s most famous musicals, this really is a great show to see this summer, AC or no. The Lion King is based on the hit Disney film with music and lyrics from Time Rice and Elton John. The story is based on Hamlet and follows a young lion cub called Simba. When Simba is forced into exile from his kingdom by his envious uncle, he meets the hilarious meerkat named Timon and his warm-hearted warthog pal, Pumba. Soon after, Simba adopts his carefree lifestyle of “Hakuna Matata,” until he realizes his true identity and returns to claim his throne from his evil uncle.

The Gillian Lynne Theatre

Again, this newer theatre is a great one for air conditioning. Found in Covent Garden, this theatre is much more modern and accessible than its neighbours.
The current show playing there is My Neighbour Totoro. This play transferred to the West End last year following a sell out run at the Barbican. Based on the Studio Ghibli animated film, the story follows two sisters Mei and Satsuki who move to their curious new home in the countryside. Exploring their unfamiliar surroundings, they soon encounter a world of spirits, sprites and magical creatures. Maybe it was all a dream? Or perhaps they really are now friends with the giant, ancient protector of the forest named ‘Totoro’ and his friend the ‘Catbus’.

Shaftesbury Theatre

The Shaftesbury Theatre also has air conditioning. Your mascara may still run though due to tears of laughter instead of sweat. They are currently playing Avenue Q which was also recently extended. The show is now playing until January 2027.
Avenue Q is an outrageous comedy which uses Jim Henson inspired puppets as some of their characters. The story is following Princeton, a fresh college grad who moves into the less than desirable, Avenue Q! He quickly meets his new and colourful neighbours where together they navigate the life struggles of work, love and paying the bills in their own hilarious way. Irreverent and irresistible, Avenue Q is the mischievous and charming musical full of infectious songs and loveable characters that will leave you smiling for days.

The Prince Edward Theatre

Lastly, The Prince Edward Theatre makes its way onto our list of Theatres with Air Conditioning! Stay as cool as the dead this summer whilst watching Beetlejuice! Having finally transferred from the USA to London Beetlejuice is based on the cult classic Tim Burton film of the same name.
Meet Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager sharing her home with a pair of newly-deads and the demonic ghost with the most, Beetlejuice. He’s dead trouble, but if you really want to feel alive, just say his name three times…
