Located at the brand new purpose built theatre in Canary Wharf, The Hunger Games: On Stage is a must see this summer! The show is based on the best selling novels and subsequent blockbuster film franchise of the same name. The story follows Katniss Everdeen in the dystopian world of Panem. As punishment for a rebellion against the Capitol years ago, Panem selects a group of 12 – 17 year olds annually who are forced to fight to the literal death. When Katniss’ little sister is chosen, she fearlessly volunteers herself as tribute. Alongside her as the male tribute is a boy from her town who will do whatever he can to protect her. The story follows their Hunger Games as Katniss unwittingly becomes the face of a new uprising.

This show truly is action packed and great for older kids and teens. It is a fast-paced, cinematic experience so will keep even the shortest of attention spans engaged.

My Neighbour Totoro
The Gillian Lynne Theatre

My Neighbour Totoro is another great choice when looking for summer holiday theatre deals. It is great for the whole family and is also based on the beloved Studio Ghibli animation. The story follows two sisters who move to the countryside following the decline of their mothers health. As they get familiar with their surroundings, they find themselves befriending a mysterious woodland creature and magical sprites of the forest. Maybe it was all a dream? Or perhaps they really are now friends with the giant, ancient protector of the forest named ‘Totoro’ and his friend the ‘Catbus’. This production uses beautiful puppetry to complete the story telling.

Avenue Q
The Shaftesbury Theatre

This is definitely a production for older families with a recommendation for ages 13+ with parental guidance. Don’t let the puppets fool you! The show shares creators with South Park and The Book of Mormon. The story follows a college graduate who recently moves into the less than desirable neighbourhood of Avenue Q. There, he meets eccentric neighbours and learns many important and hilarious life lessons along the way!

Beetlejuice
The Prince Edward Theatre

Based on Tim Burton’s cult classic movie of the same name, Beetlejuice is finally playing in London. Following a successful run on Broadway and touring in the US, the production has made its West End transfer. The story follows a troubled teen who moves into a new home. Unfortunately the house is already occupied by a couple of newly-deads. The musical follows a lot of haunting within the house and matters get even worse when they summon a poltergeist Beetlejuice.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow

This hit play recently announced its closing date. Another screen to stage adaption, this show is award winning for its special effects. The play is set within the world and mythology of Stranger Things and serves to prequel to series so it isn’t necessary to have watched the hit Netflix series. Set in 1959, Hawkins is a regular town with regular worries. That is until new student Henry Creel arrives. Unfortunately for his family, they find that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach. The musical is based on the Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist. The story follows the story of a poor orphaned boy in Victorian London. When he is taken in by a gang of pickpockets his world get simultaneously brighter and darker. When a rogue British agent pilfers plans for a top-secret weapon, CIA and KGB spies converge on London’s Piccadilly Hotel in pursuit of the elusive file. The story follows a clueless young couple, a hapless actor angling for an exciting spy movie role, and enough double agents to confuse even the sharpest operative, in a mission that’s hilariously out of control.
