The Motive and the Cue (Opening 9th December)

the Motive and the cue

The Motive and the Cue is transferring to the West End in December, following its highly acclaimed, sold-out run at the National Theatre,

Directed by Academy Award, Tony Award and Golden Globe winner Sam Mended (The Lehman Trilogy) and based on the making of Richard Burton and John Gielgud’s ‘Hamlet’ on Broadway, this play was celebrated as a ‘love letter to theatre’ by the Evening Standard.

Written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) this fierce and funny play offers a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and the celebrity.

The show follows the story of Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor and playing the title role in a new production of Hamlet directed by John Gielgud. But during the rehearsal process, two ages of heater collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel.

The play will star Johnny Flynn as Burton, Mark Gatiss as Gielgud, and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor.

The Motive and the cue will play for a strictly limited 15-week run at the Noel Coward Theatre from the 9th of December 2023. Book your London theatre tickets now.
