What is the Cyrano de Bergerac about?

The story is set in Paris where we meet Cyrano, simultaneously a gifted soldier and poet to boot. Despite his military prowess, beautiful turn of phrase and quick wit, his doubts about his appearance hold him back. Particularly when it comes to matters of the heart. He has secretly loved his child hood best friend for years. However, when she expresses an interest in a young soldier (Christian) in Cyrano’s regiment, Cyrano finds himself us an unwilling cupid. Although handsome, Christian is hopeless with expressing his feelings and so Cyrano writes letters on his behalf, wooing the woman he loves for somebody else.

This heartfelt story is beautifully told with a mixture of prose and modern language. This adaptation to the text as well as the skill of the actors makes the story extremely accessible to the audience whilst maintaining the integrity of the story.

Who is in the cast of Cyrano de Bergerac?

Playing the title role of Cyrano is Adrian Lester. Across all reviews, he is highly acclaimed for his performance in this role. He conveys all the heart and humour of the character whilst connecting onstage with his fellow cast and audience members alike. Lester is already an Olivier Award winner and the current reviews suggest his performance in the show may just see him up for another one. Alongside Lester as Roxanne is Susannah Fielding. Her performance is so powerful and you had the sense that the whole theatre was hanging on her every word and desperate for her to truly see Cyrano (despite the fact that many of us already know how their story ends).

The remaining cast are Levi Brown as Christian with Joseph Christain as Edmond and Scott Handy as Comte de Guiche. Also, Sunny Chung plays Sister Claire/Madame Jodolet with Philip Cumbus as Le Bret and Greer Dale-Foulkes as Abigail. Rachel Dawson plays Ann-Sofie with Oliver Grant as Jean, David Mildon as Jodolet/Carbon and Matt Mordak as Valvert/Pierre. Completing the cast are Daniel Norford as Louis, Chris Nayak as Monfleury/Bernard and Christian Patterson as Ragueneau. Lastly, Josh Sneesby plays Raphael and Robert Jackson plays Arnauld.

In a genius move by the RSC, adaptors Simon Evans and Debris Stevenson have featured a young voiceless Cyrano throughout the show. They are played by Taiva Hove, Joshua Maduike and Elim Mapira.
