Based on the 1994 animated film, Disney’s The Lion King celebrated a huge anniversary this weekend in London.

The Lion King first opened on the West End on 19 October 1999 at the Lyceum Theatre, where the show has played ever since. This meant that on Saturday 19 October, the musical marked its 25th birthday both in London and at the Lyceum Theatre. The show celebrated with a special gala performance on Sunday 20 October.

Before this, the show took a short break to give the stage a bit of a makeover. The Lion King closed its doors between 19 and 18 September 2024. During this time had a new stage floor fitted, prop refurbishments, and lighting and automation upgrades.

The Lion King is a stage musical based on the Disney animated classic. The musical includes music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi. With additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. The stage show features puppetry and actors in animal costumes to tell the story of the show.

The Story of The Lion King

The show is set in the Serengeti plains of Africa and follows the story of Simba, a young lion cub. Simba is learning to grow up and reclaim his rightful place as king after the death of his father, Mufasa. In this heartwarming tale, we see Simba meet a meerkat and a warthog. They teach him the meaning of ‘Hakuna Matata’ and return to claim his throne from his evil uncle Scar.

The Cast

The current cast of The Lion King includes George Asprey as Scar and Shaun Escoffery as Mufasa. Both actors have appeared in the show for the last 16 years. The cast also includes Thenjiwe Thendiva Nofemele as Rafiki, Gary Jordan as Zazu, Alan McHale as Timon, Mark Roper as Pumbaa, Owen Chaponda as Simba, Merryl Ansah as Nala, Meloné M’kenzy as Shenzi, Jorell Coiffic-Kamall as Banzai, and Mark Tatham as Ed.

The Songs

The Lion King includes all of the iconic music from the original film. Such as ‘The Circle of Life’, ‘I Just Can’t Wait to Be King’, ‘Hakuna Matata’, ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’, and ‘Be Prepared’.
