ELF THE MUSICAL RETURNS TO THE WEST END

After it’s extremely popular run last Christmas ELF THE MUSICAL returns to the West End for a second year in a row! Playing for a strictly limited season from the 15th of November 2023 until the 6th of January 2024 at The Dominion Theatre. 7 years after its last West End run, the show’s 2022 run was a sold-out success and proved the production’s popularity so there’s no wonder it’s back again.

The musical is based on the 2023 New Line Cinema film that starred Will Ferrell and featured a book by Tony Award Winners Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin with songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Skylar and Chad Beguelin. The show follows the story of Buddy who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts when he’s a baby and is transported to the North Pole where he is raised as an elf. Unaware of the fact that he is actually a human, Buddy’s heigh and poor toy-making skills finally brings him to face the truth. Buddy then embarks on a journey to New York to find his birth father, learn about his true identity and discover the true meaning of Christmas.

The 2023 cast is yet to be announced but the production will be once again directed by Philip Wm. McKinley, original set and costume design by Tim Goodchild, choreography by Liam Steel, lighting design by Patrick Woodroffe, sound design by Gareth Owen and video design by Ian William Galloway.

FULL CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR THE WIZARD OF OZ

THE WIZARD OF OZ coming to London this summer! The producer of the smash-hit Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat presents a brand-new version of one of the world’s most beloved musicals.

Featuring the iconic musical score from the original Oscar-winning film such as ‘Over the Rainbow’, ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’ and ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ with additional songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

Full casting for the show has been announced and Georgina Onuorah is set to play the lead role of Dorothy. Georgina is currently playing Ado Annie in the multi-award-winning production of Oklahoma! which is currently playing at The Wyndham’s Theatre. She has previously starred as Dorothy in the show at The Curve in Leicester and was also alternate Cinderella in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella at The Gillian Lynne Theatre.

Previously announced cast includes Jason Manford as The Cowardly Lion, Ashley Banjo as The Tin Man, Dianne Pilkington as The Wicked Witch of the West, Louis Gaunt as The Scarecrow, Christina Bianco as Glinda the Good Witch, Ben Thompson as Toto and Gary Wilmot as The Wizard/ Professor Marvel.

The full cast is completed by Annie Southall, Charlotte St. Croix, Claire O’Leary, Eamonn Cox, Emily Ann Potter, Geoff Aymer, Harrison Wilde, Jacqui Dubois, Jessica Daley, Jonathan Dryden Taylor, Lauren Stroud, Marley Fenton, Michael Lin and Sam Stones.

MRS DOUBTFIRE OPENING THIS MONTH

Heading to London direct from its sensational sold-out run up in Manchester, the new comedy musical MRS DOUBTFIRE is ready to dazzle and delight the West End from this month! Opening at The Shaftesbury Theatre on the 12th May 2023, this is a hilarious and heartfelt story about holding onto your loved ones against all odds.

After a long and messy divorce out of work actor Daniel creates the alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in his kids’ lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about being a father.

Based on the 1993 film and filled with all the heart, MRS DOUBTFIRE THE MUSICAL has been created by John O’Farrell, Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick, the award-winning team behind Broadway’s Something Rotten.

WEST END WEEKLY ROUND-UP (WEEK COMMENCING 17th APRIL)


SISTER ACT RETURNING TO THE WEST END

Sister Act is returning to the West End in 2024 starring Alexandra Burke and Beverley Knight. The production will open at the Dominion Theatre from Friday 15th March to Saturday 31st August 2024.

Beverley Knight will be reprising her role of Deloris Van Cartier following her sensational performance during the shows’ run in London of Summer 2022. The Olivier Award-winning star will star in shows from the 15th March to the 8th June 2024. Number One best-selling artist Alexandra Burke will then take over the role from the 10th June having previously played a role in the 2016 tour.

The musical is based on the iconic movie and tells the story of the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music. A disco diva’s life changes rapidly when she witnesses a murder and under protective custody is hidden in a convent, disguised as a nun.

THE TIME TRAVELLER’S WIFE THE MUSICAL FURTHER CASTING ANNOUNCED

The Time Traveller’s Wife: The Musical is based on the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger and the New Line Cinema film by Bruce Joel Rubin and is set to open at The Apollo Theatre in October 2022. This run is following a sold-out season of the musical at Storyhouse in Chester in October 2022.

The new British musical is brought to life with original songs from Joss Stone and Dave Stewart, the book is adapted by multi-award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson and the production will be directed by Bill Buckhurst. The cast will consist of David Hunter as Henry, Joanna Woodward as Clare, Tim Mahendran as Gomez, Hiba Elchikhe as Charisse and Ross Dawes as Henry’s Dad.

The show follows the story of Henry and Clare who have a relationship like no other as they are flung apart by time but united by love.

The musical opens on the 7th October 2023, book tickets now to see this brilliant new musical. 

HER MAJESTY’S THEATRE TO BE RENAMED

Following the coronation of King Charles III on May 6th the West End venue Her Majesty’s Theatre will be changing its name to His Majesty’s Theatre. The theatre which is currently the home to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera is one of six West End theatres owned by Webber.

The Theatre opened back in 1706 as the Queen’s Theatre and the name has always changed historically to match the monarch at the time. Previous productions at the theatre have included Paint Your Wagon, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. Phantom of the Opera opened at the theatre in 1986 and is the 3rd longest-running show on the West End after The Mousetrap and Les Misérables.

SHOWSTOPPER! THE IMPROVISED MUSICAL

SHOWSTOPPER! The Improvised Musical is returning to the West End. The hit show will be moving to The Cambridge Theatre, which is currently the home of MATILDA THE MUSICAL, from the 22nd of May. This is following the show’s previous residency at The Lyric Theatre.

SHOWSTOPPER! First started in 2008 and since then has played over 1200 shows. The musical is completely improvised on the spot from audience suggestions meaning that no 2 shows are ever the same. It is the first-ever long-form improv show to have a full West End run and has also been nominated for an Olivier Award.

VARDY V ROONEY THE WAGATHA CHRISTIE TRIAL OPENS IN THE WEST END

Adapted from the real-life transcripts, witness the case of Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney unfold in their own words. VARDY V ROONEY: THE WAGATHA CHRISTIE TRIAL opens at The Ambassadors Theatre in April 2023 for a limited 6-week season.

The play documents the dramatic events from the week-long court hearing surrounding Coleen Rooney’s sting operation on fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy. Now it’s time to witness ‘The Scousetrap’ for yourself and make your verdict.

The show had an initial series of stagings late last year and is now back as a full production in the West End. The play is also set to embark on a tour from late May through to June 2023, the tour includes Liverpool, Southend, Salford and Brighton. Reprising their roles for the West End production and the tour is Lucy May Barker as Rebekah Vardy and Laura Dos Santos as Coleen Rooney.

VARDY V ROONEY: THE WAGATHA CHRISTIE TRIAL runs from 6 April 2023 until 20 May 2023 at the Ambassadors Theatre London.

GROUNDHOG DAY CAST REVEALED

GROUNDHOG DAY is returning to London in May at The Old Vic following its world premiere in 2016. The show is based on the 1993 movie and features music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, who previously wrote Matilda the Musical. The musical’s book is written by Danny Rubin and the production is directed by the venue’s artistic director Matthew Warchus. Having won two Olivier Awards the first time round for ‘Best New Musical’ and ‘Best Actor in a Musical’, this run is sure to be a huge success.

Andy Karl will reprise his role as Phil Connors, the grumpy weatherman who is forced to relive the same day over and over again. Joining him as Rita Hanson will be Tanisha Spring who has previously starred in Moulin Rouge! and The Prince of Egypt. Also joining the cast are Jasmin Colangelo Kelly Ewins-Prouse, Kamilla Fernandes, Aimée Fisher, Zack Guest, Nick Hayes, Jacqueline Hughes, Ashlee Irish, Chris Jenkins, Andrew Langtree, Billy Nevers, Eve Norris, Mark Pearce, Ben Redfern, Tanisha Spring, Durone Stokes, Alex Stoll, Jez Unwin, Annie Wensak, and Matthew Whennell-Clark.

ASPECTS OF LOVE FURTHER CASTING ANNOUNCED

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ASPECTS OF LOVE is opening at The Lyric Theatre on the 12th May 2023 for a limited 26-week run until the 11th November 2023. 34 years after starring in the original West End production, Michael Ball returns to the much-loved musical, this time playing the role of George.

Based on the novel by David Garnett and directed by Jonathan Kent, this heart-breaking story of passion, love, life and loss in post-war France and Italy follows three generations of the Dillingham family spanning over 17 years. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart, the story proves how love really does… change everything.

Joining Michael Ball and John Bogyo will be Laura Pitt-Pulford as Rose, Danielle De Niese as Giulietta and Anna Unwin as Jenny.

The remixed version of the greatest love story of all time has officially come to a close in London. On Saturday &JULIET played its final performance at The Shaftesbury Theatre.

From the writers of Schitt’s Creek, &JULIET is a pop musical celebrating the legendary songwriter Max Martin filled with classic hits we all know and love. The incredible soundtrack includes hits from icons like Britney Spears, Katy Perry, The Backstreet Boys and Demi Lovato. This clever and witty retelling of Shakespeare’s most well-known play may have taken its final bow on the West End but don’t fear this isn’t the end. The show has announced plans to tour the UK from 2024 and has recently opened on Broadway. Further details for the tour including dates, venues and casting are yet to be confirmed.

A STRANGE LOOP IS COMING TO LONDON

The smash-hit Broadway production of A STRANGE LOOP is set to transfer from New York to The West End this summer. The show will open at The Barbican Theatre on the 17th June for a strictly limited 12-week season.

The musical written by Michael R. Jackson was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was first produced off-Broadway in 2019 and then premiered on Broadway at The Lyceum Theatre in April 2022, where it went on to win ‘Best Musical’ and ‘Best Book of a Musical’ at the 75th Tony Awards.

The show follows the story of Usher, a Black queer man writing a musical about a Black queer man writing a musical about a Black queer man… hence the strange loop.

A STRANGE LOOP is only the 10th musical ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama with the previous winner being Hamilton. This powerful and thought-provoking production is sure to wow the audiences of London just as much as it did in New York after winning every Best New Musical Award in New York. You don’t want to miss this.

A STRANGE LOOP will open at The Barbican on the 17th June 2023.

A LITTLE LIFE EXTENDS RUN AT THE SAVOY

The much-anticipated play A LITTLE LIFE starts at The Harold Pinter Theatre on the 25th March 2023 and is set to play for a limited run until the 18th June 2023. However, it has just been announced that due to the unprecedented demand for tickets to its now sold-out run the show will now be extended for another 5 weeks in London. It will transfer to London’s Savoy Theatre from the 4th July 2023 to the 5th August 2023.

The stage adaptation of Hanya Yanagihara’s award-winning novel follows four college friends in New York City: aspiring actor Willem (Luke Thompson), successful architect Malcolm (Zach Wyatt), struggling artist JB (Omari Douglas) and prodigious lawyer Jude (James Norton).

The play explores a story of friendship as ambition, addiction and pride threaten to pull the group apart. The 4 friends always find themselves bound by their love for Jude and the mysteries of his past but when those secrets finally come to light will the friendship survive? A LITTLE LIFE is a beautifully introspective look into the complexities of trauma and how it affects us to our very core.


THE CRUCIBLE OPENS

The National Theatre’s acclaimed new production of THE CRUCIBLE is set to transfer to the West End this June for a strictly limited season.

Playing at The Gielgud Theatre from the 7th June 2023 to the 2nd September 2023, this magnificent re-staging of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece is a gripping story of power and its abuse.

This production of the classic play is brought to life on stage by Olivier Award-winner Lyndsey Turner and incorporates stunning set-design by Tony Award Winner Es Devlin. The play takes place in Salem, where a witch hunt is bout to begin. A group of young women find themselves possessing a terrible power – their words. As fear quickly spreads throughout the community and public accusations are thrown about, the truth becomes increasingly elusive and the true concept of justice is put on trial. You won’t want to miss this extremely intense and thought-provoking production that is influenced by the harrowing true story of the Salem Witch Trials.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA EXTENDS RUN AND RELEASES NEW IMAGES

The hauntingly beautiful musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA play has announced that it will be extending its West End run until Saturday 2nd March 2024. This extension is met with relief from many fans as the Broadway production closed in February this year. Everyone will be happy to know that this ghostly love story will continue to encapsulate audiences’ night after night at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

The show has been running for over 35 years in London, making it the 3rd longest-running show on the West End after The Mousetrap and Les Misérables. The musical score includes songs such as ‘All I Ask of You’, ‘Music of the Night’, ‘Masquerade’ and of course the iconic title song.

MRS DOUBTFIRE ANNOUNCES WEST END CAST

The full casting for the West End production of Mrs Doubtfire has been announced!

As previously announced Gabriel Vick (Avenue Q) is set to lead the show as Daniel Hillard. He will be joined by Laura Tebbutt (School of Rock) as Miranda Hillard, Carla Dixon-Hernandez (Matilda the Musical) as Lydia Hillard and Cameron Blakely (Newsies) as Frank Hillard.
Samuel Edwards (Anything Goes) as Stuart Dunmire, Marcus Collins (Kinky Boots) as Andre, Ian Talbot (Hairspray) as Mr Jolly and Kelly Agbowu (Sylvia) as Wanda Sellner.

Further casting includes Nicole Carlisle, Joshua Dever, Joseph Dockree, Rebecca Donnelly, Amy Everett, Maria Garrett, Kiera Haynes, Vicki Lee Taylor, Adam Lyons, Lisa Mathieson, Corey Mitchell, Ellie Mitchell, Matt Overfield, Rhys Owen, Christopher Parkinson, Micha Richardson, Tom Scanlon, Paulo Teixeira and Samuel Wilson-Freeman.

This production follows a preview run in Manchester last autumn and the show is due to open in London on the 12th May 2023 at The Shaftesbury Theatre.

THE PRETTY WOMAN IS SAYING GOODBYE TO THE WEST END

Pretty Woman is officially saying goodbye to the West End! The show will play its last show on the 18th June 2023 before heading off on a major tour of the UK and Ireland.

The production has also announced that Oliver Tompsett (currently playing William Shakespeare’s in &Juliet) will be taking over the lead role of Edward Lewis. He will be replacing Danny Mac in the show from the 4th of April.

WE WILL ROCK YOU ANNOUNCES LEAD CASTING

LEAD CASTING

The hit musical based on the iconic music of Queen is returning to London in June 2023 at The London Coliseum.

The show will play a strictly limited run from the 2nd June to the 27th August and is set to star Lee Mead as Khashoggi and Brenda Edwards as the Killer Queen.

Lee Mead started his career on the TV show ‘Any Dream Will Do’ where Andrew Lloyd Webber set out to find someone to play the next Joseph on the West End.

Brenda Edwards previously played the role of the Killer Queen in both the UK tour of the production and in the record-breaking run at the Dominion Theatre.

The popular stage show first opened in the West End in 2002 at the Dominion Theatre and played for 12 years making it the 11th longest-running musical at the time. The musical has firmly remained a fan favourite among theatregoers and this new production is set to rock the house down this summer

Further casting is yet to be announced.

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION EXTENDS RUN AND ANNOUNCES NEW CAST

Agatha Christie’s courtroom drama has announced that it is extending its West End run until the 28th April 2024. This immersive production is set in London County Hall and the audience become the jury.

A whole new cast has also been announced for its extension. Harry Giubileo will make his West End debut as Leonard Vole with Madeleine Walker as his wife Romaine. Returning to court are Jo Stone-Fewings and Crispin Redman as Sir Wilfrid Robarts QC and Mr Mayhew, Terrence Wilton as Mr Justice Wainwright and Nick Sampson as Mr Myers QC.

Completing the cast is Bradley Adams, Nick Morrison Baker, Dafydd Gwyn Howells, Theo Hold-Bailey, Ben Jacobson, Caitlin Kaur, Phoebe Newlan, Godiva Marshall, Tracey Wilkinson, David Shelley and Jo Servi.

OLIVIER AWARD NOMINATIONS ARE OUT

The Olivier Award nominations are out and leading the way this year are the likes of ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ at The Barbican, Standing at The Sky’s Edge at The National and Oklahoma! At The Young Vic.

‘My Neighbour Totoro’ has an outstanding 9 nominations including ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Original Score’. ‘Stand at the Sky’s Edge is up for 8 awards including ‘Best New Musical’ and ‘Best Director’.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s modern revival of Oklahoma! received 7 nominations including ‘Best Musical Revival’, ‘Best Actress in a Musical and ‘Best Actor in a Musical

The winners will be announced at the ceremony on the 2nd of April 2023!

LUCIE JONES TO RETURN TO LES MISERABLES

Lucie Jones is returning to Les Misérables as Fantine!

This will be Lucie’s 3rd time in the barricades as she first starred as Cosette in 2010 before going on to play Fantine in 2021. Lucie is currently starring as Elphaba in Wicked.

Lucie will take over the role of Fantine from the 27th of March at The Sondheim Theatre.

THE TIME TRAVELLER’S WIFE MUSICAL IS COMING TO LONDON

What’s On Stage Awards

On Sunday 12th of February, the What’s On Stage Awards were held at The Prince of Wales Theatre to celebrate the last year of British Theatre!

Big winners of the night included Jodie Comer for her role in Prima Facie which won her ‘Best Performer in a Play’ and the production also won ‘Best New Play’ and ‘Best Graphic Design’.

My Neighbour Totoro also took home plenty of awards, 5 to be exact! Including ‘Best Set Design’, ‘Best Direction’ and ‘Best Lighting Design’.

Six The Musical also took home the award for ‘Best West End Show’.

2 POPULAR WEST END SHOWS TO BE SHOWN IN CINEMAS


The popular West End productions LIFE OF PI and BEST OF ENEMIES are to be shown in cinemas via NT Live in 2023.

After winning 5 Olivier Awards, the smash-hit play LIFE OF PI came to an end in London on the 15th of January 2021 after an extremely successful run at The Wyndham’s Theatre. It was then announced that the play would be going on tour around the UK and Ireland from the Summer of 2023.

The play follows the story of a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi who after a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean is the only survivor with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger. Time is against them, nature is harsh, and who will survive?

Based on one of the most extraordinary and best-loved works of fiction and winner of the Man Booker Prize, selling over fifteen million copies worldwide and featuring state-of-the-art visuals and breathtaking puppetry with state-of-the-art visuals. Life of Pi will be broadcasting in cinemas from 30th March 2023..
The critically acclaimed production of BEST OF ENEMIES is currently playing at The Noel Coward Theatre after its sell-out run at The Old Vic.

The play recounts the historical debate of 1968 that changed American politics forever. Two candidates, conservative William F Buckley and Liberal opponent Gore Vidal fight for the presidency of the United States during a time of political divide. This event not only changed American politics but it also transformed television news for good.

Zachary Quinto makes his West End debut as Gore Vidal and he is joined by David Harewood who reprises his role as William F Buckley. The New York Times stated that BEST OF ENEMIES is ‘the most riveting play in London’. The production will play in The West End until the 18th of February 2023 before hitting cinemas from the 18th May 2023.

LOUISE REDKNAPP TO STAR AS TEEN ANGEL IN GREASE

The world’s favorite high school romance returns to London this summer at The Dominion Theatre. GREASE THE MUSICAL remains a fan favourite and this production is set to star British icon Louise Redknapp as Teen Angel. Redknapp, who started her career in the girl bad Eternal will perform from the 2nd June to 29th July.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA NEW CASTING ANNOUNCED

Having recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is the 3rd longest-running show on the West End and has been seen by over 145 million across the globe.

Jon Robyns is joining the cast as ‘The Phantom’ from Monday 3rd April 2023. Robyns is currently starring in the West End production of Les Misérables as Jean Valjean, playing to sold out audiences and standing ovations night after night.  Other West End credits include Hamilton, Memphis, Spamalot and Avenue Q.

Holly Ann Hull is also stepping into the role of Christine Daaé after playing the productions alternate Christine since 2021 and playing the role in the UK and Ireland tour.

Paige Blankson will be joining the production as the new alternate Christine from Monday 13th February and Earl Carpenter will be reprising his role of ‘The Phantom’ from Monday 13th February to Saturday 1st April.
